Double or Nothing Predictions

Business has been booming lately for All Elite Wrestling with a new lucrative TV rights deal in the bag, and the announcement of another two-hour show, AEW Collision, premiering next month. All this news just makes this Sunday’s Double or Nothing PPV feel like an even bigger event. Every year this show has a special feeling due to its history as the promotion’s debut PPV event 4 years ago. A lot has changed in AEW since May 25th, 2019, but the promotion continues to make sure people who purchase their PPVs get their money’s worth. With a stacked card consisting of 9 matches, I had to once again tag in Adam Hess to help me serve up some scorching hot takes and predictions for this weekend’s show.

Four-Way for the AEW World Championship:

MJF (c) vs Sammy Guevara vs “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry vs Darb Allin

ADAM: MJF against these 4 dorks? Come on. Maybe it was a little premature to call Sammy Guevara a pillar with The Acclaimed and Ricky Starks getting way hotter.

MJF

MIKE: It’s MJF and 3 dorks to be correct. Don’t feel bad though, every year someone cuts a Royal Rumble promo and says they’re going to eliminate 30 other superstars. Math can be tricky.

A little disappointed that  AEW’s “four pillars” facing off for the world title doesn’t feel bigger. It feels more like going with the four-way was a necessity due to a lack of available credible challengers to MJF.

MJF

AEW World Tag Team Championship:

FTR (Dax Hardwood and Cash Wheeler) (c) vs Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal

MIKE: Dax and Cash have themselves some fat new contracts and are hopefully getting the tag title run they deserved a year ago. There’s not much to think about with this one. Top Guys, Over.

FTR

ADAM: Oh boy. How can you bet against J E Doubble F J A Double R E Double T haha Jeff Jarrett? My man carries Gutiars to the ring the way I carry groceries, too many and with great effort.

WAIT

I’m being told this is a tag match.

FTR

Ladder Match for the AEW TNT Championship:

Wardlow (w/Arn Anderson)(c) vs Christian Cage (w/ Luchasaurus)

ADAM: I kind of like the idea that Luchasaurus takes off his dinasaur mask at night and stares at himself asking “How did I end up here?” This feels like a match built for chicanery and maybe I’m projecting what I want to happen more than predicting what will happen buuuuuut

Christian Cage

MIKE: This might be a hot take or an ice-cold one, not sure, but the man did Wardlow’s momentum peak with the MJF feud. The hot potato he’s played with TNT belt hasn’t helped either, so hopefully TK doesn’t decide to do another back-and-forth with the title again here. With the roster split coming for Collision, it could be a good chance for the TNT champion to be a key act for one of the shows. So let’s run with Wardlow for a while and see how he does.

Wardlow

ADAM: Do we know if Wardlow is friends with Punk or does Punk hate him for some minor slight?

MIKE: Settle down. I won’t put up with you slandering the best in the world. I am for some reason craving a muffin now though.

21-Man Blackjack Battle Royale for the AEW International Championship:

Orange Cassidy (c) and 20 other wrestlers

MIKE: Cassidy has been on quite the run. He made his 22nd successful title defense this week on dynamite. Not sure what he did to deserve having 20 challengers in his next defense but I digress. Seems like a good opportunity to move the belt off him without having to have him take a definitive L and lose any momentum. Of the names confirmed, I’ll go with Ricky Starks as someone who is on the rise and would be a good fit to get a run with a mid-card title.

Ricky Starks

ADAM: What a foolish prediction. It’s like you forgot that the winner of this match is always the Joker. So the game has become predict the Joker and I have a few obvious candidates. Upon googling, I can go ahead and eliminate Bruno Sammartino so I’ll go with my second best guess

Kota Ibushi

AEW Women’s World Championship: Jamie Hayter (c) vs Toni Storm

ADAM: Apparently Jamie Hayter is hurt. Like not make the pay-per-view hurt. So is this match gonna happen? Will there be interference?

The only outcome that makes sense is to put it on Toni who then somehow passes it up to Saraya. I bet she could run with a belt.

Toni Storm

MIKE: The Jamie Hayter injury definitely throws a wrench into the women’s division and is really unfortunate for Hayter who really broke out thanks to the way the crowds have gotten behind her. If the match happens as scheduled I expect the title to change hands. But hopefully after that the wheels get into motion for a certain someone else we’ll talk about later to eventually take the belt.

Toni Storm

ADAM: Are you predicting an Adam Cole run at the belt?

Ethan Page and The Gunns (Austin and Colten) vs The Hardy’s (Jeff and Matt) and Hook.

MIKE: I’ll take the babyface trio. No offense to anyone involved, but this really feels like one of those matches that we’ll all agree could’ve been left off the card by the time the show enters its 4th hour.

Hardy’s and Hook

ADAM: I like ⅔ of the participants in this match but if it didn’t happen how long would it take you to realize they skipped it?

Hardy’s and Hook

AEW TBS Championship:

Jade Cargill (c) vs Taya Valkyrie

ADAM: With no real challenger to the TBS throne this seems like the last stop on the “Who the hell is gonna beat Jade” Train, but why would they put Taya over Jade? Does that accomplish anything? I’m hoping at some point in the next 59 wins AEW figures out a plan for the TBS Belt

Jade Cargill

MIKE: I’m of two minds here, because I don’t think this would be a good spot to end Cargill’s undefeated streak, but I also really want them to start moving her towards winning the Women’s World title. Jade has the look and presence of a superstar. She should be one of the faces of this company as it continues to try and grow its audience. With all that in mind, I’ll keep hoping they eventually have her win and unify both women’s belts. There’s honestly no need for both of them at this point.

Jade Cargill

Anarchy in the Arena:

Black Pool Combat Club vs The Elite

MIKE: This match, without a doubt, has had the best build of any on the card. The war between these two factions seems to be hitting its climax, but I don’t rule out that they could keep this going and build to an eventual Blood and Guts match. Either way, it’s a tough call for who will come out on top. Both groups are Teflon, In the sense that either could take the loss without losing too much. My dream scenario of a returning CM Punk costing the elite the match most likely won’t happen, so I’ll go with an Elite victory and an incensed Bryan Danielson claiming things aren’t over between the two groups.

The Elite

ADAM: You want my hot take? Matches that don’t take place inside a ring aren’t that entertaining. It would be as if a chunk of a movie took place away from the lighting and cameras. This match will be fine I’m sure but everyone else will love it more than I do. Now that I’ve crumudgened around enough

The Elite

Unsanctioned Match:

Adam Cole vs Chris Jericho

ADAM: Honestly couldn’t tell you what’s more confusing, the signing a contract for an unsanctioned match or that Sabu got involved at the 11th hour. Remember when this feud had something to do with Britt Baker? Jericho is in the “Put over young guys phase of his career” but Adam Cole isn’t a young guy anymore even tho he always seems like he is.

Adam Cole

MIKE: Am I the only person that thinks having Anarchy in the Arena and an Unsanctioned Match on the same PPV is overkill? Feels like Adam Cole is in the midst of what could be a big babyface push that leads to him being an eventual challenger for MJF, so I totally expect him to come out of this feud with Jericho on top.

ADAM COLE BAY BAY!!!!
